Why Men Shouldn't Be Afraid Of The 'Downward Dog'

by Sportitude

Pilates is the cult fitness class that has been dominating our Instagram feeds and fitness magazines for some time now.  With models, athletes and fitness bloggers singing the praises of the full body workout, it’s hard not to be tempted to join a local class.

However, truth be told, endless images of awkward poses, crop tops, and phrases such as "downward dog" have made Pilates somewhat intimidating for men. But with some of the world’s most successful sportsmen, from Novak Djokovic to Kobe Bryant swearing by the class, it’s time to leave your ego at the door and sign up for a class.

If the world’s number 1 tennis player isn’t enough to convince you then these four reasons should do the trick.

1. Develops neglected muscle groups: While lifting weights will help give you those biceps you desire, Pilates will target neglected muscle groups which don’t usually receive attention during a weights session. Pilates is specifically developed to target smaller muscles groups, in turn reducing your chances of injury at the gym.

2. Core Strength: It’s no secret that Pilates helps build core strength, as the majority of movements practiced during the class require major stabilization of the core. The class especially targets the transverse abdominals, located under your six-pack.  This also helps build back muscles and again (you guessed it) reduces the chances of injury at the gym.

3. Improved flexibility: As a general rule, the more muscle mass you obtain, the less flexible you become. This not only impacts on sports performance but leave’s you more prone to injury. Pilates’ focuses on stretching and increasing a range of motion in all major joints and muscles in the body.

4. Being present: At the centre of all Pilates classes is a focus on breathing and being present. If you are unable to sit still long enough to do a Yoga class, Pilates presents the perfect alternative to de-stress and learn to become aware of your surroundings.
