Top 3 Stability Running Shoes

by Sportitude

Running shoe expert Ethan from Sportitude reveals the top 3 stability running shoes that should be on your radar; the Asics Gel Kayano 29, Hoka One One Arahi 6 and New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13.

Ticking off Sportitude’s criteria of what the best stability running shoes should be, these running shoes cater to overpronators – providing guidance to help keep you on your most efficient motion path. They feature research-driven cushioning technologies that make them stand out from the pack in terms of comfort and responsiveness, and are available in a variety of widths to achieve your ideal fit.

We’ll also touch on the stability running shoes we’re looking forward to in the year ahead, particularly the New Balance Fresh Foam X Vongo v6 and Asics Gel Kayano 30 and give you a sneak peek into what we know about them so far.

Check out the video with full transcript below.

Hey guys, Ethan here from Sportitude Running and I’m excited to talk to you today about all things stability shoes, and most importantly the two stability shoes we're most excited for in the coming year of 2023.

However, sitting here in the last week of January 2023, to look forward we also need to look back and see what's going on in the current market.

We're going to talk to you about our favourite stability running shoes at the moment and then we'll touch on exciting things to come in the year ahead.

Who Is A Stability Running Shoe For?

Before we get into the footwear itself, we have to ask the question, what foot type are we putting into a supportive shoe?

Typically, we're looking at someone with a flat medial arch or an overpronator. An overpronator tends to move onto the medial side a long way or very fast as they move through their gait cycle.

As we're looking forward to the two stability shoes we're most excited for in the coming year, we're going to look around and see what in the current market are Sportitude’s favourites right now.

Criteria For The Top 3 Stability Running Shoes

The way that these were chosen were through their purpose. Do they stabilise unstable runners and help people feel more confident in their running?

We also look at staff data from our team downstairs who put them on customers' feet and listen to customer feedback.

The following are some questions we asked when choosing our top 3 stability running shoes.

  • Are runners loving them?
  • Do they fit well and serve the purpose for that customer?
  • Which one has had the best update?
  • Where have they come from and where are they going?

Asics Gel Kayano 29 Running Shoes

The first shoe that we've picked is probably one of the most recognisable names in running and for non-runners alike in Australia, the Asics Gel Kayano 29.

We've seen a great update this year for the Asics Gel Kayano 29. We have the LiteTruss support system and FlyteFoam Blast Plus in the forefoot for that snappy and responsive feel.

A few quick stats about this running shoe, we have 25mm of stack in the heel and 15mm in the forefoot for the men’s model, and 24mm and 14mm respectively for the women's model. In terms of weight, we have 300 grams in a men's size 9 and 255 grams for a women's size 8.

We love this shoe down on the shop floor. It is available in widths which means it's accessible to a lot of people. It even fits a little bit wider and more voluminous than previous models which means it fits really nicely. Runners are loving that FlyteFoam Blast in the midsole, making it a really versatile daily trainer for everyone to get around.

Hoka One One Arahi 6 Running Shoes

The second shoe we've chosen for the top 3 stability running shoes list is the Hoka One One Arahi 6. It’s another great supportive running shoe with Hoka's J-frame support technology and a really light and soft foam throughout the rest of the midsole. It feels nice and light to keep you moving through your gait cycle quickly with their Meta-Rocker and a responsive feeling as well.

A few quick stats on this running shoe, we have 35mm in the heel and 30mm in the forefoot, making it a higher stack shoe. We have 275 grams in a men's size 9 and 222 grams in a women's size 8 which also makes it the lightest shoe today which we know and love from Hoka. We love their high stacked shoes where you sit in the lateral and medial walls of the midsole.

We also love how soft and cushioned it is with the wide stable base to get you comfortable when you're out running, and we love getting people in it in store. It's available in widths and fits a lot of people really well.

We don't often have a huge amount of people coming in and asking for it right off the bat but once people have tried it on they absolutely love it. Especially for people who have tried Hoka trail running shoes and are looking for a stability option for the roads, this is when we're reaching for it a lot.

New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13 Running Shoes

The third option today is probably the best update for a stability running shoe in a while, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v13. This running shoe has been fitting and performing a lot better than previous models and we've loved fitting it on runners' feet on the shop floor.

A few quick stats about it, we have 27mm of stack in the heel and 17mm in the forefoot. It’s 309 grams for a men's size 9.5 and 243 for a women's size 8.

On the shop floor we have had a lot of confidence bringing this out for people to try on as it's just been fitting and feeling so well for the general population.

It comes in widths so it fits a lot of people which makes it really accessible. The support in this shoe is unreal. It’s really good and gives a lot of runners a lot of confidence.

The Fresh Foam X throughout the midsole makes it feel really soft, responsive and runnable. This is a stability running shoe that we've been putting on a lot of customers' feet and they've been enjoying it.

Honourable Mentions

Now to talk about the honourable mentions that just missed out on ranking as one of our top 3 stability running shoes. The first one is the Asics GT-2000 running shoes (Asics GT-2000 11 above).

There wasn't a huge update with the Asics GT-2000 10 from the Asics GT-2000 9, and with the Asics GT-2000 11 having just come out, we haven't got quite enough data on it for it to be included in the list today. However, we’re really looking forward to the Asics GT-2000 12 which will be coming out later this year.

The second shoe that's only just missed out would be the Brooks Glycerin GTS 20. Due to sales data it's only just missed out this time, but would definitely be included if we were doing a top 5 stability shoes review.

What Stability Running Shoes Are We Looking Forward To?

New Balance Fresh Foam X Vongo v6

One of the reasons I'm sure you're here is to find out what shoes we are most looking forward to in the coming year. First up, the new New Balance Fresh Foam X Vongo v6. This one is going to be a game changer. It’s totally different from previous models with no medial posting and from what we understand it's going to have an inverted plate in the midsole as their form of support.

We don't know too much else about it and we won't be able to say too much more until we've seen a final sample and had a good run on it on our treadmills downstairs, but we're really excited for this model and seeing what they can do with that plated running shoe.

Asics Gel Kayano 30

The second running shoe we're really looking forward to in 2023 is none other than the new version of the Asics Gel Kayano, the Asics Gel Kayano 30.

30 years of market research and design is going into this new model and we can't wait to get it on our feet. Not to shock you at all, but this running shoe will not have a medial post likely for the first time in 30 years.

Instead, we've got Asics' brand new technology for support, their 4D guidance system. We'll have to see how well it performs out on the roads and on runners' feet, but for us from what we've seen we think it's going to be one of the most runnable Asics Gel Kayanos yet and we can't wait to see what people think.

The Wrap Up

There you have it, the two shoes that we're most excited about for 2023 plus the three shoes that we think are the best on the current market.
