How To Save Your Hair From Chlorine This Summer

by Sportitude

Beach and pool days are all fun and games until those summer vibes become a distant memory and what you are left with is sun damaged hair that says anything but beach babe. After having invested hundreds of dollars into the perfect summer hue, the last thing you want to be left with is a blonde that is far greener than ash, damaged waves and split ends which will give you no option but to go for a winter chop!

Now before we kill your summer fun in the sun, we aren’t saying hide until the sun goes down and avoid the pool, no. The good news is, you can enjoy all the sun, fun and chlorine your heart desires without damaging your hair by following some simple rules. This includes ditching the brush...

Shower before you dive

Now it may seem like a waste of time to shower before jumping into a pool only to have to shower once you have finished but there is method to this madness. Apart from obvious hygiene reasons, diving in with wet hair will actually help protect it from chlorine. As our hair is porous, once it’s saturated with water, very little chlorine will be able to enter the shaft. So do as grandma always asked and shower before you dive in.

Do an initial rinse

It doesn’t matter how many times you jump in and out of the pool, always ensure to rinse residue and chemicals out of your hair and off your skin with a quick 5-minute shower sans the shampoo and body wash.

Follow up with a Chlorine Specific Shampoo

Didn’t think such a shampoo existed? Neither did we until we did our research. Opt for a specifically formulated shampoo and conditioner, which rid your hair of any chlorine or chemical residue and will help deliver moisture back into stressed hair. This will not only help with the condition of your hair but will prevent your blonde from turning green and your highlights taking on a copper look.

Pour some apple cider vinegar on it

If you haven’t stocked up on chlorine specific shampoo and conditioners, a short-term solution may be sitting in your pantry. Remove and residue and build up of chemicals and breathe new life into your blonde highlights with an apple cider vinegar rinse at home. One tablespoon to every 200ml will get the job done.

Opt for a swim cap

If you really don’t want to be investing any more time and money into ensuring your hair remains in tiptop condition, opt for a swimming cap. Sure they may not be the most fashionable item but neither is green hair. If your summer exercise routine consists of swimming rather than running laps, a swimming cap will become your savior, both time and money-wise.

Ditch the hair tie and brush

Wet hair swells which means it is at it’s most fragile state and prone to split ends and damage. Opt for a wide comb brush to untangle wet hair and for split ends sake do not tie up your wet hair which can stretch up to as much as 1/3 of its length when wet.
