Earth Day: Your Eco-Friendly Running Gear Guide

by Sportitude

This planet is our habitat to perform, to play, to respect and to protect. If each of us commits to making small, positive changes for the environment, we can help combat the climate crisis together.

If you want to shop with a difference, to run while keeping your carbon footprint lighter on the environment, Earth Day (Saturday 22 April, 2023) should be on your calendar. Earth Day encourages you to shop mindfully rather than impulsively. At Sportitude, we’re celebrating brands that are making progress in nurturing the sustainability of sport. This begins with eco-conscious initiatives – combining innovation with a passion to protect the environment.

At Sportitude we value the transparency of brands regarding their sustainability goals – helping you to shop ethically. Eco-conscious and forward-thinking sportswear brands consider not only profitability and the benefit to the consumer, but the impacts to the environment.

Utilising eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester to help keep plastic waste out of landfill and our oceans is an essential step.

There’s no downside of choosing recycled polyester over virgin polyester. Running clothing with a high recycled content sets you up with the same lightweight, sweat-wicking properties as virgin polyester to stay on track of your performance while reducing plastic pollution.

Choosing more eco-friendly products from leading sportswear brands like On Running, Nike, Brooks, Asics and Adidas ensures that your performance and making ethical choices to support the environment can go hand in hand.

Small changes by the consumer – that is, choosing recycled over virgin materials – makes a huge difference on a broader scale to support the sustainability initiatives of big brands and lift the burden off the environment.

Alongside choice of materials, thoughtful manufacturing processes that preserve resources like water and reduce carbon emissions can dramatically decrease a brand’s environmental impacts. Mizuno for example are spearheading the sustainability of sport through a carbon neutral approach in the manufacturing of specific models of running shoes – the Mizuno Wave Neo Collection - and we hope to see these changes become the standard in future.

For runners and sports enthusiasts, it’s not about denying yourself the running shoes, running clothing or sports equipment you need, but to choose sustainable alternatives that will support your fitness goals and keep you chasing new PBs while helping out the planet. After all, the future of sport, the environment and humanity depend on sustainability.

A critical message of Earth Day is to buy based on need. Quality over quantity is the goal, with Earth Day aiming to make the environmentally destructive concept of ‘fast fashion’ history. Instead, Earth Day encourages you to focus on products you can have a long-term partnership with, rather than cheap products that will have a short life, deteriorate quickly and be discarded into landfill.

Making the choice to purchase sustainability-focused products and support eco-conscious brands makes you a part of the solution to the global crisis we are currently facing, with the future of our natural world uncertain.

We encourage you to go green from head-to-toe with these more eco-friendly sportswear products - and thank you sincerely for your care and consideration in your purchases.

Environmentally Preferable & Sustainable Running Shoes

1. Mizuno Wave Neo Collection

Taking a moment to slow down and be mindful when purchasing a product doesn’t mean you can’t run feeling fast and free when putting foot to pavement.

The Mizuno Wave Neo Collection creates a floating, effortless-feeling sensation in every stride for eco-conscious runners. Inspired by nature, Mizuno’s Wave Neo collection are the most eco-friendly running shoes in the Mizuno family.

The Mizuno Wave Neo Ultra and Mizuno Wave Neo Wind take a carbon neutral approach, with Mizuno partnering with the non-profit U.S. National Forest Foundation to spearhead the restoration of woodlands. For every Mizuno Wave Neo shoe sold, two trees will be planted to make positive change to the environment and support healthy ecosystems.

This afforestation project will ensure the equivalent amount of CO2 produced during the manufacturing process of these running shoes will be absorbed by the new trees, rather than impacting future generations. In a word, Mizuno are restoring balance through carbon offsetting.

Over 60% of the materials in the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind and 70% of the materials in the Mizuno Wave Neo Ultra have environmentally-friendly origins – including putting recycled polyester into play and plant-based materials. The sockliner and midsole contain Bloom, an organic material derived from algae. Sourcing this material helps clean and restore the health of waterways and minimises CO2 emissions.

The sockliner remains undyed to preserve water by 100% compared to traditional dyeing processes, and plant-based Mizuno Enerzy Lite technology provides lightweight and cloud-soft cushioning without weighing down the environment.

Both running shoes in the Mizuno Wave Neo collection are built on a durable platform with the weight-saving G3 outsole standing up to the challenges runners face – providing ever-reliable traction while extending the lifespan of your eco-friendly running shoes.

Mizuno Wave Neo Wind

The Mizuno Wave Neo Wind caters to both new runners and advanced road warriors seeking a snappy and responsive ride with smooth propulsion to conquer any run, including when you're shifting the pace up a gear.

It weighs in lighter than the Mizuno Neo Ultra for runners craving less weight and firmer cushioning, being free of the plush Enerzy Core foam included in the Mizuno Wave Ultra. It features Pebax Rnew material in the Wave Plate with eco-friendly origins, being derived from castor bean oil.

To sum it up in two words, we'd call the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind sustainable and springy.

Mizuno Wave Neo Ultra

The Mizuno Wave Neo Ultra is designed for new runners to intermediate road warriors that prefer a softer sensation underfoot with Mizuno’s shock-absorbing and stabilising Foam Wave technology coupled with a higher stack height (39mm stack height compared to the 36.5mm stack height of the Mizuno Wave Neo Wind) to pack in more plush protection underfoot.

The Mizuno Wave Ultra features 3 forms of Mizuno Enerzy to go the distance in comfort – Mizuno Enerzy, Mizuno Enerzy Core and Mizuno Enerzy Lite (made of castor bean oil as a more eco-friendly alternative to typical midsole foams). This winning formula creates a luxurious and effortless-feeling ride.

To sum it up in two words, we'd call the Mizuno Wave Ultra sustainable and soft.

2. On Cloudsurfer 7 Women's Running Shoes & On Cloudsurfer 7 Men's Running Shoes

On Running combine innovative Swiss-engineering with a passion for the environment at its very core – with a firm belief that performance and sustainability aren’t mutually exclusive.

Favourites in the On Running family like the latest evolution of the On Cloudsurfer running shoes – the On Cloudsurfer 7 - contain a high content of recycled materials. The On Cloudsurfer 7 is made with 30% recycled materials, with about 85% of the total polyester used being recycled polyester. On Running have also entirely removed the plastic overlays from the upper - saving weight and reducing environmental impacts.

On Running have thought beyond purely materials, minimising wastage and preserving resources through sustainable manufacturing. Their dope dyeing process stands out from the pack as an innovative, eco-friendly method - colouring the yarn while saving 90% water compared to standard dyeing techniques.

On Running aim to work with nature rather than against it – and it’s this philosophy alongside their unique CloudTec and other performance technologies that have put them on the radar for runners during their relatively short lifespan since their foundations in 2010. On Running are continuously envisioning ways to make the manufacturing of running shoes cleaner and greener through initiatives like the CleanCloud project, while delivering awe-inspiring benefits to you the runner.

In terms of the On Cloudsurfer 7's performance, a pure, smooth-feeling and soft sensation is achieved with a computer-optimised midsole using FEA-technology (Finite Element Analysis) - creating a joy-inspiring ride.

3. Brooks Ghost 15 Women's Running Shoes & Brooks Ghost 15 Men's Running Shoes

With the latest evolution of the Brooks Ghost 15, Brooks are making the move to carbon neutral manufacturing. Developed with a focus on sustainability without compromise to the signature Brooks Ghost feel and performance you love, the Brooks Ghost 15 is built for eco-conscious runners. They keep you running light and running lighter on the environment.

Sustainable from heel-to-toe, the Brooks Ghost 15 gives a new life to discarded waste by putting recycled materials into play - thereby dramatically decreasing carbon emissions. Brooks then fills in any gaps in their sustainability goals by buying high-quality carbon offsets to create a 100% carbon neutral running shoe.

The moment you lace up and put these running shoes to work on the pavement, it’s clear that by making this smooth ride sustainable, it doesn’t mean Brooks has had to cut any corners when it comes to performance.

The Brooks Ghost 15 running shoes feature the winning formula of a breathable engineered air mesh upper, the weight-saving yet plush DNA Loft v2 midsole and durable Green rubber in the outsole. This ensures a springy ride with balanced cushioning to tick off your running goals and sustainability goals all-in-one.

Brooks' goal to send "zero manufacturing waste to landfill by 2025" is on the horizon. They also aspire to develop a fully circular performance shoe and apparel by 2030 - that is, a product that can be entirely recycled upon its retirement and reborn new as the same product.

By designing footwear with the end of the product's life in mind, leading brands can be more environmentally responsible and make a real difference in reducing the vast quantity of pre-loved shoes that are destined for landfill.

4. Saucony Peregrine 13 Women's Trail Running Shoes & Saucony Peregrine 13 Men's Trail Running Shoes

The Saucony Peregrine 13 is a positive sign of the improvements and potential sustainability milestones to come – with ambitions to evolve the innovative brand so that recycled and/or renewable materials will become the norm, not the exception.

Saucony is also mindful of the fact that durability matters. The longer the lifespan of a running shoe, the longer you as a runner can enjoy it - keeping it on your feet and out of landfill. With stronger mesh in the upper featuring recycled materials and hard-wearing PWRTRAC rubber outsole, the Saucony Peregrine 13 is more resistant to abrasions and punctures – making it well-suited to a life on the trails.

At the end of their life, you can book a collection with UPPAREL to recycle or repurpose your trail running shoes.
