5 Things You Need To Know Before Your First Boxing Class

by Sportitude

So you have just booked in for your first class. Whether you were inspired by the plethora of celebrities taking up the recently revived fitness craze, from GIGI to the entire Victoria’s Secrets crew, or you were simply sick of your spin class, well done for taking the first step. Now let’s get down to the basics. 5 things you need to know before your first class:

1. Arrive early, especially to your first class. Take 30 minutes to familiarize yourself with your surroundings and wrap your hands before boxing. It will provide added protection for your knuckles and wrists.

 2. But don’t freak out. It’s not as intimidating as it sounds or a boys club. Like any fitness class, you can start from the bottom and work your way up. Don’t be afraid to go at your own pace and ask your instructor questions if you need to.

3. Wear the right clothing. Tights are non-negotiable. With gloves preventing you from pulling your pants up every few seconds, you will want to ensure you wear a snug pair. Compression tights present the ideal option as they are proven to aid in both performance and recovery so you can get back into the ring sooner rather than later.

4. Hydrate and eat lite: As with any fitness class, prepare to sweat it out. While you will need to replenish your electrolytes when following your class, ensuring you are well hydrated before you start will facilitate better coordination and focus. Don’t eat a heavy meal before you class, as your body will use precious energy for digestion rather than to aid your performance.

5. Prepare to feel empowered. While we have all experienced that post workout high, there is no feeling like putting on a pair of gloves and punching away the day’s stresses.
