by Sportitude

When it comes to skincare, you can invest all the money in the world in creams and miracle elixir’s, but turns out grandma was right all along, beauty comes from within. Well, kind of. We’re not about to tell you to ditch you three-step program or to stop applying nutrients to your skin. What we are saying is that what you eat matters just as much as what you apply. When it comes to superfoods for the skin, the list of ingredients is endless so we have decided to make the choice a little easier for you. Here we share the top 5 foods to eat for healthy skin that can easily be added to your daily salad (Because we know salad is non-negotiable).

Pomegranate: Eat pomegranates to fight free radicals and minimise fine lines. The seeds of pomegranate are rich in punicic acid, a type of antioxidant, which promote cell renewal and regeneration helping fight fine lines of ageing. Add pomegranate seeds to your salad or opt for an organic pomegranate juice.

Walnuts: Eat walnuts to improve your skin’s texture and firmness. Walnuts contain a high level of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which is essential to maintaining your skin's elasticity while the copper and mineral compounds found in the nut are shown to boost collagen production. Add them to your salad or have a half a handful as your daily snack.

Kidney Beans: Eat kidney beans to help fight acne. Studies have found that acne can be related to low levels of zinc, which stops our skin from repairing itself. Kidney beans are high in zinc so do at them to your salad or bake some for a healthy breakfast alternative. They also improve the metabolism of amino acids, lipids and fatty acids leading to more healthy and glowing skin.

Pears: When it comes to superfoods for the skin, they don’t come much better than pears. Pares are packed with glow copper, potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium and Vitamins C, E, B, and K. What this means is one serve is full of radical fighting antioxidants. Add them to your salad or smoothie or eat them as they are. Do remember to opt for an organic option that doesn’t require you to peel the skin as most of the benefits are found in this outer layer.

Watercress: Watercress are part of the mustard family, and while these delicate salad additions are lite and airy, they pack a punch when it comes to skin friendly vitamins such as A, C and E. They also help create glowing skin by cleansing and oxygenating the skin tissue.
