5 Reasons We Should All Be Lifting Weights (And It's Not About The Ego)

by Sportitude

Lifting weights has become somewhat associated with shredding and bodybuilding. The mere word conjures images of “shredding” and 7-day pre-packed meal plans. While there is nothing wrong with this, some of us just aren’t built for the Hulk life. However before you dismiss lifting weights altogether and hitting the cardio workouts instead, one should consider the health benefits of entering the weights room.

1. Lifelong benefits: Exercise has become a key ingredient to a healthy and longer life, however strength training, in particular, has been scientifically linked to a longer life. A study carried out by the ULCA in 2014 directly linked more muscle mass a lower rate of premature death.

2. Sleep like a baby: Studies show that those who push themselves during their gym sessions, especially in the weights room, are found to sleep better and not wake up as frequently during the night.

3. Bone health: Weight lifting and resistance training have been linked with increasing bone density, reducing one's risk of fractures and breaks which increase with age.

4. Heart health: While cardio has been closely associated with improving cardiovascular health, resistance training is found to play an important role in overall health.  The American Heart Association recommends individuals implement two strength training sessions a week to help lower blood pressure.

5. Mind your soul:  While exercise is found to help boost happiness, resistance training, in particular, has been linked to lower rates of anxiety and depression as well as boosting brain power. Let’s not forget the self-esteem benefits of lifting some weights, because whether you look like Hulk or not, it’s one of the best ‘feel-good’ activities out there.
