10 Things To Consider Before Committing To A Gym

by Sportitude

Choosing the right gym is like committing to buying a home. Ok maybe not as drastic, but the stakes are high. While it may be tempting to join the most aesthetically appealing gym or one with the best deal, there are some things to consider. Because the right fit will make the difference between a fitness overhaul and an unused membership. Between the price, location, vibe and the finer print, the choice can be overwhelming. Here are 10 questions to consider and research before you sign the dotted line.

1. Location, location, location! When it comes to picking the right gym, it’s much like looking for a home. One must always consider the area and commute to work. When it comes to sticking to those early morning classes and post workout sessions when energy levels are at an all-time low, choosing a gym which crosses your daily commute to and from work becomes crucial.

2. Fitness style: With a plethora of smaller gyms opening on what seems to be a weekly basis, it’s important to consider your fitness style.  If you enjoy doing your own thing then class schedules shouldn’t matter. However if group sessions are a top priority, then ensure you look at the type of classes on offer and the times offered. Ensure they fit into your schedule.

3.Timing. For those with a hectic work schedule, time may be a deciding factor. If you plan on attending a gym during peak hours in the morning (6am) and after work (6pm) then the size of the gym should be considered. You don’t want to spend half your time waiting on equipment after all. If your work hours are unpredictable, a gym with 24/7 access may be the most important deciding factor.

4.Equipment: One must always consider first and foremost the type of equipment they like to use and ensure the gym they are considering is fully equipped. Although a given, one should also consider the state of the equipment on offer. If a more advanced gym is an extra 5-minute drive away, it may be worth the slightly longer commute.

5.Facilities: If you plan on getting ready at the gym and driving straight to work, the gym facilities may be a deal breaker. Because the last thing you want after a sweaty workout is to be met with an ill-equipped, moldy bathroom. Ensure you take a full gym tour and have a list of non-negotiable gym facilities before you attend your tour.

6.Parking. While this point may sound like it belongs to the lazy girl’s guide to exercising, one should ensure they check out the parking facilities of a gym, especially during peak hour. When it comes to exercise, any excuse which may present itself to keep driving home, should be eliminated.

7.Personal Trainer: If a personal trainer is part of your new fitness plan then it pays to do your research. After all, the right gym with the wrong trainer is like living in a beautiful home in a dysfunctional relationship. Request a trail class with your potential trainer and turn up prepared with all the right questions. Finally, trust your gut. If your personalities don’t gel, chances are you won’t get much out of your sessions.

8.Community or peace: Different gyms have completely different vibes. If you prefer exercising tucked away in your own corner then the space and layout of the gym will be key. The same goes for atmosphere. You should visit your potential gym at the time you plan to go to see if the vibe is what you are looking for.

9.Flexibility: One of the least researched aspects of a gym membership and one that may cause you the most heartache- flexibility. If you are unable to commit to a regular schedule due to work and may need to cancel session’s last minute, ensure you know your gym’s cancellation policy. Smaller gyms are increasingly implementing 24-hour cancelation fees, which may cause problems for those who can’t commit to a weekly routine. This also extends to your potential gym membership. If you are not 100% committed, a gym that only offers 12-month contracts may not be for you.

10. Try before you buy. Always ensure you sing up for a trail at any potential gyms. This is the only way to ensure all the above aspects are suitable and if the vibe of the gym gels with your style of fitness. Once your trial has finished, take the time to reflect on your experience and whether your new gym haunt helped improve your fitness levels and routine.
