Discover Your RunDNA: Running Gait Analysis At Sportitude Hindmarsh

by Sportitude

RunDNA is an exclusive shoe fitting technology that we’re proud to provide at our award-winning store Sportitude Running at Hindmarsh. As running shoe experts, Sportitude’s friendly staff value the power of knowledge from heel-to-toe and most importantly, know that every runner and every foot type is different.

RunDNA is a performance shoe fitting technology that provides accurate metrics regarding your biomechanics - the way you run - and it begins with the first step.

Whether you're a beginner runner or elite marathoner, you can benefit from this state-of-the-art and personalised running gait analysis - looking at your unique foot type, running form and goals to match you with the best running shoes for you.

Alongside our expertise and passion, Sportitude’s emphasis on the science of running and how it shapes your comfort is a key reason we’re ahead of the pack.

In this blog we’ll outline the expert advice you can gain from a visual gait inspection by one of our running shoe specialists. We'll then dive into the cutting-edge technologies behind RunDNA as well as the customer experience you can look forward to when you book an in-store RunDNA shoe fitting assessment.

We’ll also cover Live Fit, Sportitude Running's video chat shoe fitting service for runners from all across Australia. Live Fit allows us to support your running journey and help you find your ideal fit from afar.

Expert Advice: Visual Gait Inspection

Paired with an understanding of your running goals, a visual gait inspection offers a good starting point to determine the level of stability and cushioning that would partner well with your foot type.

In a visual gait inspection, our shoe fitting specialists observe and record you running on a treadmill with an iPad and play this back in slow motion video.

From this we can infer characteristics regarding your foot type and running gait. This includes whether you’re an overpronator (flat arch - rolls inwards) that would benefit from a stability or stable neutral shoe, a supinator/underpronator (high arch - rolls outwards) that requires higher degrees of cushioning or a neutral runner.

We can make informed estimates on how your foot type will affect your gait on a basic level. We can also look for cues to determine your footstrike pattern (e.g. heelstriker, midfoot striker or forefoot striker) which affects how your body absorbs impact forces and how your running shoes will wear over time.

A visual gait inspection is a free service for in-store customers and no booking is necessary.

Cutting-Edge Technology: RunDNA & RunScribe Pods

RunScribe pods take this understanding a leap further as the next evolution of shoe fitting technology. RunScribe pods are an innovative, wearable running technology used during your RunDNA shoe fitting assessment that collect and analyse real-time data regarding your biomechanics.

Valuable for data-driven runners of all levels as well as coaches and physical therapists, these metrics allow us to guide the purchase of your running shoes so you can make an informed decision that matches your foot type and your running goals.

We use three key data inputs to develop a full picture of what running shoes may work for you in terms of your natural biomechanics and your comfort first and foremost:

  1. Comfort - Although quantifiable data is a critical part of your RunDNA assessment, comfort is purely based on feel and your personal experience within the running shoes. We’ll ask you questions to address if there’s any points of irritation or pressure and to gauge whether you have a correct fit from heel-to-toe.
  2. RunScribe Pods – RunScribe pods are attached to your shoe laces to capture metrics regarding your biomechanics as you jog or run on the treadmill. We’ll discuss the data collected by RunScribe pods in further depth below.
  3. Play Back Video - Alike with a visual gait inspection, we review a slow motion video of you running on the treadmill to make connections between the data gathered from RunScribe pods and your real-world running gait. This allows your RunDNA assessment to bridge the gap between technology and your movement in the physical world.

It’s about the science of comfort.

Together, this trifecta of data forms our proprietary comfort algorithm. Developed in collaboration with the University of South Australia, the comfort algorithm focuses on the correlation between your biomechanics and the specific fit and feel of a running shoe.

Looking at both your comfort and your movement data provides clear guidance on what type of running shoe is best for you. It's a game-changer for runners of all levels and takes the guesswork out of choosing a running shoe that you can rely on.

RunScribe pods capture so much more information than the human eye can detect. They provide data on everything from your pace, step rate (steps per minute), stride length, contact time, degree of pronation, pronation velocity (speed of pronation) and key shock absorption metrics that are influenced by the amount of cushioning under the body.

A RunDNA gait analysis with RunScribe pods can’t be beat in terms of accuracy. It provides quantifiable and personalised running data to help us find your ideal fit – allowing you to run better through research.

RunDNA assessments can take 45-60 minutes and are by appointment only. Your RunDNA appointment is FREE with your shoe purchase, or $60 otherwise.

Welcome To The RunDNA Lab

When you arrive for your RunDNA appointment, we’ll show you our ‘running lab’ – complete with state-of-the-art Woodway treadmill. We’ll ask you a few questions to get a clearer idea of your running goals so we can make the most of your time at Sportitude Running at Hindmarsh.

This is the perfect time to think about what you want to get out of your running. Do you run purely for fun and fitness? Do you have your heart set on crushing a personal best or your next triathlon? Are you training for speed, endurance or both?

After an introduction, we’ll offer you a range of new running shoes for you to try on based on your answers and provide a pair of RunScribe pods so you can attach one to each of your shoes. After lacing up, it’s onto the treadmill for a jog or run to learn more about the way you move.

We’ll ask you to test a variety of running shoes on the treadmill to gauge your comfort levels as well as determine whether they work in harmony with your specific foot type and running gait. Our shoe fitting experts will interpret the data collected by the RunScribe pods and we’ll work together to find the perfect performance shoes for you.

Live Fit: Video Chat Shoe Fitting Service

If you’re interstate and you can’t make it to Sportitude Running at Hindmarsh for a RunDNA assesment – don’t sweat it. With our Live Fit video chat service, you can have a real-time conversation with one of our shoe fitting specialists without even having to step out the door and we’ll give you the ins and outs of running shoes. It’s a fantastic way for us to connect with you and runners from all over Australia, and to personalise your experience with Sportitude Running.

We’ll ask you some questions to gather information on the intended purpose of your running shoes (e.g. everyday training, high mileage running, tempo/interval running, race day), your intended running surface (road, trail, track or treadmill) as well as to gain an idea of how many hours a week you spend running.

This will allow us to guide your shoe purchases to our full ability and to personalise your running shoe selection based on the type of runner you are or your runner profile. It’s all about finding the best fit for you. As always, our primary focus is on comfort - keeping in mind that comfort leads to better performance and keeps you motivated in every stride.
