Wearing Runners For Netball? You’re Doing It Wrong

by Sportitude

When it comes to netball shoes many young athletes, particularly those new to the sport, find themselves turning to regular runners. In part due to their light feel and in part due to availability, young netballers reach for an on-trend design.

While running shoes may initially feel fantastic on the court, the right shoe can mean the difference between an injury-free season and one you'd rather forget.

So what is in the shoe?

Running shoes are designed for their intended purpose - sprint or long distance running. Netball on the other hand features a lot of lateral movement, requiring greater support for the lower limbs. Extended use of runners as opposed to netball shoes places players at greater risk of lower limb injuries.

Longevity

Netball shoes are designed for longevity, using a slightly heavier yet more durable rubber compound. Whilst investing in a new pair of shoes for that new hobby may seem daunting, a pair of runners will not withstand the netball court and you may find yourself needing two new pairs of shoes instead of one.

Longevity aside, the compounds used in the soles of netball shoes provide greater grip, essential for those indoor matches.
