Did You Know Skating Was Better For You Than Running?

by Sportitude

If you are looking to diversify your exercise routine, it may be time to release your inner child. Now, if you think roller-skating and roller-blading is reserved to those that fall in the 7-15 age bracket or for those Californian holidays, then it’s time to think again. Roller-skating will not only take you away from the daily grind of the gym but will also offer plenty of health benefits. Now buckle up, put your helmet on and hit the pavement because the benefits are there for the taking.

Let’s talk calories

Whoever said that burning calories couldn’t be fun, lied. For the average 85kg man and 73kg woman, you can burn between 10-15 calories a minute skating around your favourite park. On the lower end of the scale, that is 600 calories an hour. It’s either that or going on a stationary bike for the same amount of time. We know what option we would choose.

Let’s talk arms and legs

Skating will not only burn calories but will provide a workout for both your arms and legs. You will not only be working our your glutes but will be working out your core and arms as you balance during your skating session. If you really need another excuse, you will also be improving your balance and coordination, which will take all your gym sessions to the next level.

Let’s talk joints

Roller-skating is good for the joints. Now before you think this is a typo, hear us out. If you avoid wanting to be the hero and doing dangerous tricks, skating is actually one of the least impact sports you can partake in. The fluid motion needed to skate makes it easy on the joints, helping you enjoy the benefits of say running or dancing without the impact on the joints. A study published by the University of Massachusetts found that skating caused around 50% less impact on joints compared to running.

Let's Talk CrossFit training

If you have recently taken up CrossFit training or have been an advocate for some time, then you would know that ‘days off’ are not a choice but a necessity. If you are looking for an activity during your off days that will still burn calories, work out your legs, burn body fat and help build your core strength then you don’t need to look further than putting your skates on.

Let’s talk getting social, getting outdoors and getting happy

Putting your skates on is the perfect excuse to get together with friends, have a laugh while ticking off your daily exercise needs. Have you ever seen anyone skating while looking bored? No, neither have we. It’s also the perfect excuse to get outdoors, smell the fresh air and take in some sunshine. It will do a world of wonder for your mood and energy.
