5 Things Runners Wish They Knew At The Beginning

‘I run’ – the two words every non-runner wishes they could say when asked about their fitness routine.

‘It gets easier’ – the three words every seasoned runner wished they were told before they embarked on their newfound commitment to the cause.

While those looking to embark on a new running routine, there are a few pieces of advice that could mean the difference between giving up and sticking it out.  

1. It really does get easier. Running involves more than pounding the pavement and full speed and improving your fitness level and running form will take serious dedication – but improve you will. Start with realistic goals and distances but do run at least 3 times a week in order to acclimate your heart and lungs. 

2. It takes more than hitting the pavement. Running involves increasing your cardio and building your muscle strength. Mix it up with weights training and Pilates or yoga to feel results sooner. 

3. Don’t skimp on the good stuff: When it comes to running, technical gear will make the difference between a new found commitment to the cause or ditching the regime quick smart. The right shoes, sportswear and even socks will help prevent injury, blisters, chafing and will add comfort and an added bounce to your run. 

4.Track your progress. Tracking your run and the progress you make during each session will be all the motivation you need to keep going.  It ill place a very real number on just how far you need to go to reach those personal goals and with so many running apps on the market you will also be able to track various aspects such as calories burnt and your heart rate. 

5. Don’t assume. If you have been hitting the treadmill, don’t assume that you will glide through your run outdoors even if the distance is the same.  Treadmills don’t present challenges such as uneven terrain, cross wind, heat and rain. Being mentally prepared for a fresh challenge and setting realistic goals will be crucial to the success of your cause.
